Week 5: Our long-term 2017 Honda CR-V hasn’t been able to sway opinion when it comes to its personality, but it does have its upsides. Text and Images: Amit Benjamin

2017 Honda CR-V

It’s nearly time to bid goodbye to our long-term 2017 Honda CR-V and admittedly my opinion of it hasn’t changed drastically. I still feel it’s a great crossover to drive and ride and handling is more akin to a sedan and its mass does not slosh side to side every time you take a corner. However, it is entirely devoid of personality or character.

The looks are subjective, but I must add that now when I’ve seen many more of these on the road, I have come to the conclusion that it definitely looks better in darker colours, mainly because the aero-fakery of the design is less apparent.

The sat-nav is teeth-clenchingly frustrating. Even when you’re driving on a highway such as Shaikh Zayed Road, the nav thinks you’re driving about 500 metres on the side of the road and through a building. It’s annoyingly hilarious. Honda, I’m pretty sure this is a simple software fix, please get it sorted.

Another quirk is the audio control on the steering wheel, which is touch sensitive. In essence, you can increase or decrease the volume by swiping up or down on the button, or you could just use it like a conventional button by clicking up or down. Why the gimmickry? This doesn’t solve any problem. In fact, it doesn’t quite react to the swiping action as accurately as you’d hope. So, you either end up increasing the volume to blow-your-ear-drums-off levels, or nothing happens at all.

The obtuseness continues with the addition of a display on the instrumentation panel which shows how much torque is being chanelled to which wheel? What am I supposed to do with that information? You see these little gimmicks every where and you begin to wonder if Honda is trying to portray the 2017 CR-V as more technologically advanced than it really is.

There are upsides, too. The fuel economy is fantastic, it’s comfortable and practical and reliability has been bullet proof ever since we’ve had the car. That’s what likely matters more to most people who are looking for a family crossover. If that’s what you want in your next car, you certainly can’t go wrong with the 2017 Honda CR-V.
